Year by year Bollywood has given us some great movies, Movies like “Fan” had Shah Rukh Khan in the lead but didn’t perform well at the box office whereas “Neel Battey Sannata” went on to be commercially and critically successful despite having no big names. 2016 was not so successful in terms of numbers at a whole but few movies individually performed well. The last quarter of the year suffered some loss due to demonetization and movies like “Rock On – 2” , “Kahani – 2” had to face the consequences.

Like every year, this year too was mostly occupied by the movies of Akshay Kumar and he went on to bag some commercial and critical acclaim. Airlift was one such movie which saw Akshay Kumar playing a very different role apart from his previous roles. Airlift was released on 26th January to cash on the Republic Day and the film had patriotism angle involved in it. The movie was the first hit of the year.

Female oriented movies are less to be seen in Bollywood and if there is any such movie it certainly gets praised but only by critics and not by audiences. Neerja was one such movie which struck a perfect chord of success between audience and critics as well. Sonam Kapoor nailed her character. Neerja was a biopic based on the life of PanAm Flight Attendant Neerja Bhanot who showed immense courage during a flight hijack.
Neerja is one of the highest grossing female oriented movie of Bollywood.
3. Kapoor & Sons
Cast : Rishi Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan
Director : Shakun Batra
Directed by Shakun Batra and Produced by Karan Johar, Kapoor and Sons was a well-narrated family drama which had an ensemble cast including Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, Fawad Khan, Rajat Kapoor and the veteran Rishi Kapoor. Rishi Kapoor was all praised for his role of the senior Kapoor, which had heavy prosthetic make-up and which took a lot of time to apply.

Director : Manish Sharma
A movie narrated from the perspective of a fan of Shah Rukh Khan. The story looks interesting and over the top it has SRK playing the role of his fan and himself. It was a delight for every SRK fan and the film was quite successful in pulling out interest for the audiences. Fan, was an average performer but Shah Rukh’s character Gaurav was well praised by the critics.

Director : Omung Kumar
A biopic based on the life of Indian prisoner held captive in Pakistan for false reasons. Sarbjit had Randeep Hooda playing the title role and Aishwarya Rai playing the role of his sister. Sarbjit was an intense, emotional, drama with some great performances by the leads, which can leave you with tears.
6. Udta Punjab
Cast : Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh
Director : Abhishek Chaube
Controversies covered this film much before it’s released. After the Censor Board trying to cut out scenes from the movie and then a copy of the film leaking out on the internet, due to these Udta Punjab suffered a big loss but this crime drama film based on drug abuse in the state of Punjab excelled due to the super performances of the lead actors. Shahid Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were all praised for their respective roles and the film garnered huge success despite the controversies.

How can a year be complete without a Salman Khan blockbuster ? Sultan was one such movie which was produced by Yash Raj Films and had Anushka Sharma and Salman Khan playing the role of wrestlers. The film went on to become one of the most successful movies of Bollywood.

Director : Neeraj Tiwari
One more biopic based on the life of wrestler Mahavir Phogat and his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat. Aamir Khan played the role of Mahavir Phogat followed by Fatima Sheikh, Sana Malhotra playing his daughters and Sakshi Tanwar playing the role of his wife. The film was a huge success in terms of box office collections and went on to become one of the highest grossing Bollywood Movies of all time.

One more Akshay Kumar starer based on the famous Nanavati Murder Case. Rustom had Akshay Kumar playing the role of a Navy officer with Ileana D’Cruz playing the role of his wife. Rustom was set in the 50’s. Rustom was again critically and commercially successful.
10. MS Dhoni – The Untold Story
Cast : Sushant Singh Rajpoot, Disha Patani, Kiara Advani, Anupam Kher
Director : Neeraj Pandey
A biopic based on the most successful captain of India, MS Dhoni. The movie was as successful as Dhoni himself and garnered huge box office collections. Sushant Singh Rajpoot who played the role of MS Dhoni was very much praised for his performance.

Cast : Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Vicky Kaushal
Director : Anurag Kashyap
Directed by Anurag Kashyap this movie was loosely based on the life of a serial killer from Mumbai who haunted the city in the 80’s. Didn’t gained that commercial success but was critically acclaimed. Raman Raghav 2.0 had Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vicky Kaushal playing the lead roles. Raman Raghav 2.0 was praised for its dark humor, intense theme and haunting background score.
Apart from these, there were movies like Happy Bhaag Jayegi, Pink, Shivaay, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Dear Zindagi which were also successful in terms of box office collections and critical acclaims.
